Govt High School Panthachowk conducts School Safety Training

On the instructions of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon, the Addl. Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar , Mohammed Akbar Ganai visited Government High School Panthachowk and interacted with students and teachers undergoing Disaster Preparedness training.

Divisional Disaster Management Cell, in collaboration with School Education Deptt, J&K State Red Cross Society, Civil Defence Organisation, Fire & Emergency Services and Youth Services & Sports Department are conducting six days School Safety & Disaster Preparedness Programme in the Govt High School Panthachowk, since 23rd May. Fifty seven students, including thirteen girls from Class 8th, 9th & 10th alongwith Principal of the School, Mrs. Sabiya Drabu all the staff members are participating in the training programme.

Those who interacted with the trainees include Aamir Ali, Head Disaster Management, Dr. GM Dar, HOD Disaster Management Centre, IMPA, Mauzam Bakshi, Dy Chief Warden, Civil Defence; Ashfaq Ahmed, Shazia Kawos, Dr Anila & Fayaz Ahmed from J&K State Red Cross Society; Dr. I. Bali, Trainer from Red-R; Dr. Fayaz Ahmed from Bone & Joint Hospital; Rafiq Ahmed, (Dy. SP) Dy. Controller, Abdul Gaffar, Insp. Rafeeq, Abdul Hamid, Shakeel Ahmed, Tauseef Ahmed Dhar, Mohammed Abbass & Nisar Ahmed from Civil Defence, Imdad Ali, Irfan Hashmi, Farman & Farkhrun Nisa from GSIET, Abdul Hameed, Divisional Fire Officer, Srinagar & Bashir Ahmed, Fire Station Officer, Srinagar. The trainees also interacted with AK Wani of J&K VHA, Shabir Ahmed Lone, Food Inspector Drug Control Organisation and Daniel O’ Malley, Head of International Committee of Red Cross and Liz of Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF) and Mir Behjat.

During the training, the students and teachers were introduced to Red Cross/ Red Crescent movement and Civil Defence Organisation setup. The trainees were taught the basics of First Aid, process of performing the Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and handling of casualties, procedure of lifting injured. They were also taught procedure to handle patients with severe bleeding, wounds, fractures, spine injuries, burns and cases involving choking, animal/snake bites and procedure of preparing make-shift stretchers. The trainees performed CPR on rubberised dummy models, provided by the organisers and evinced keen interest in mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The students were educated about various categories and common causes of fires, its preventive measures and methods of extinguishing fire with the help of portable fire-extinguishers. The trainees were explained about the precautions to be taken while handling LPG. The trainees were also explained about the fire safety drill and school safety & disaster preparedness plans. The trainees were taught procedure of making various knots including Reef knot, Chair-knot etc. by the expert trainers from Civil Defence. The trainees attending the programme are showing keen interest and are actively participating in the demonstration. After completion of the training the trainees will be eligible to become Red Cross & Civil Defence volunteers. Divisional Commissioner has announced that the school safety programme will be conducted in other schools of the Valley as well, so that the student community is better prepared to handle emergencies.
