Kashmir to be a Tobacco free society

seminar on anti- tobacco, organized by Voluntary Health Association
of India (VHAI) in collaboration with Divisional Administration
Kashmir was held at IMPA. Divisional Commissioner, Dr. Asgar Hassan
Samoon inaugurated the
seminar. Director General, IMPA,Mr. Abdul Hamid co-chaired the
Seminar. Besides a galaxy of doctors and eminent citizens of
Srinagar, the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Mehraj Ahmed Kakroo and
Deputy Commissioner Budgam Mohammed Rafi participated. The speakers
on this occasion urged for launching a massive campaign against
smoking and said it is imperative to protect our young generation
from this menace.
On this occasion, a message of HE the Governor, Mr. N.N Vohara was
also read
out. HE the Governor in his message has underscored the need for
discouraging the consumption of cigarettes and other tobacco
products.
He has also urged for organizing workshops, seminars, rallies and
similar other initiatives to achieve the goal. Mr A.M.Mir (IAS Retd)
Executive Director JKVHA welcomed the guests and Dr.Prof. G.Q
Allaqabad, Chairman of JKVHA gave a brief background of the
activities under taken by the organisation.
Ms Seema Gupta of VHAI, New Delhi also addressed on the occasion. On the occasion Divisional Commissioner Kashmir in his inaugural address assured that all necessary measures will be taken to make Kashmir Division Smoke free. He resolved to start from his office complex and assured that no one will be allowed to enter Divisional Commissioner Kashmir's office complex with cigarettes. Similar instructions will be issued to all the Heads of Departments to ban entry of tobacco and tobacco products in their offices. Special squads will be constituted for ensuring that no one is allowed to smoke in public places. He assured that all necessary measures will be taken for preventing sale of cigarettes to children under the age of 18 years. Police and special squads will ensure that sale of cigarettes within 100 yards of education institutions is prohibited.

The meeting discussed various measures for conducting the Panchyat
Elections in the Valley which include publication of draft
electoral
rolls ,list of poling booths, transportation facilities, polling
material, availability of ballet boxes and police bandobast.
The meeting was informed that District Bandipora has 869
constituencies while Anantnag has 2054, Budgam -2155, Srinagar
-79,
Kupwara-2716, Pulwama-1350, Kulgam-1060, Gandebal-744,Shopian-763
and
Baramulla 2006 .
The Divisional Commissioner on the occasion highlighted the
importance
and advantages of Panchayat Elections and said that these
Elections
would provide powers to the grass root level to decide the welfare
and
development of the respective areas. He said it would also help
monitor the on-going works besides, ensuring better educational
facilities. He said the Panchs and Sar-Panchas could also settle
the
disputes within their jurisdictions.
