Seven medical shops sealed on instructions of Div Com Kashmir

On the instructions of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon a special squad of Drug & Food Control Organisation alongwith Police sealed seven medical shops near SMHS hospital which were violating the provisions of licence under the Drug & Cosmetic Act. The shops seized include Tawakal Medicate, Dar-ul-Shifa, Chinar Medicate, Zaien Medicate, Cooperative shop SMHS, Bhat Medicate Bund and Prescription Corner. The medical shops were substituting drugs and were involved in touting of patients. They were also functioning under unhygienic conditions and qualified chemists were not present, while dispensing medicines.
The squad comprised of Deputy Controller, Drugs Kashmir, Nazir Ahmed, Asst Controller Drugs, Mohammed Yunis, SHO Karan Nagar, Basharat Ahmed and team of Drug Inspectors.
Acting on complaints that have been highlighted in the media, Div Com constituted the multidisciplinary squad of Drug & Food Control Organisation, Police and District Administration so that they can conduct random checks of the medical shops. Div Com has appealed to the public that in case of any complaint they should immediately contact the officials/police so that punitive action is taken against the culprits.
Div Com asked the Drug Controller’s office to increase the vigil and ensure that the public gets safe drugs. It has been informed that Drug Control deptt has already lodged 117 challans against the culprits and seized expired medicines worth Rs 6.5 lakhs which include addictive medicines.
Div Com has taken up the matter with the Government for formulation of a cell to monitor the effectiveness of drugs, so that in case medicines do not comply with the standards they can be categorised as spurious. Moreover, he has also directed the concerned to initiate the process of monitoring the prescription pattern, by the State Medical Council so that a check is maintained on the quality of medicines prescribed by doctors and practitioners.
Meanwhile, noted cardiologist Dr. Naresh Trehan in a written reply to the Drug Controller, has said that he has been misquoted by a section of press that spurious drugs are being sold in the Valley. Dr Trehan has clarified that statements in press are totally misrepresented and statements attributed to him are totally untrue.

On the instructions of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon, the Drug & Food Control Organisation continued with the crackdown on medicates selling drugs, not adhering to the provisions of drug licence.
A special squad led by Dy. Drug Controller, Kashmir, Nazir Ahmed alongwith Asst Drug Controller Srinagar, Mohammed Yunis and SHO Soura, Mohammed Rafiq inspected various medical shops near SKIMS Soura. Eleven medical shops were sealed by the squad, as they were found indulging in selling expired medicines and the qualified chemist was not present. Some shops were found selling Nimesulide and Phenyl Propanol Amine (PPA) which have been banned by the Drug Controller of India. The medical shops include Pharma Life Care Soura, Pharma Vision, J&K Drug Store, Saba Medicate, Al-Shifa Medicate, Abdal Medicate, International Pharmacy, Lone Medicate, Trust Medicate and Soura Medicate. The squad also inspected Pharmacies at Lal Bazaar, Nigeen, Hazratbal, Foreshore road, Nishat and Bemina alongwith SHO Nigeen, Nisar Ahmed, SHO Lal Bazaar, Ghulam Mohammed and SHO Parimpora Ghulam Mohiuddin. The squad sealed three medical shops at Lal Bazaar viz. Inayat Medicate, New Swaleh Medicate, Aroma Medicate and Naseem Medicate at Zakura. Four medical shops, Mehfooz Medicate, Shah Medicate and Mir Medicate all located in Boatman Colony Bemina and New Mediquick near JVC Medical College, Bemina were sealed for selling medicines without the qualified person. Earlier, 11 shops were sealed in Karan Nagar area as they were found indulging in touting at SMHS Hospital. The general public has appreciated the action initiated by Div Com Kashmir and urged him to continue the drive, so that no medical shop dares to sell expired or substandard drugs.
