        Ananthnag is one of the six districts of Kashmir Valley and lies in the Southern side of valley. The district is bounded in the south and east to the ranges of perpanchal mount and in the north and west by Pulwama district. It is spread over an area of 3984 sq.kms. The district consists of five Tehsils, Viz Ananthnag, Bijbehara, Doru, Kulgam and Pahalgam, which was further being subdivided into 26 land revenue circles and 146 Patwar halqas. There are 645 villages including 19 uninhabited areas in this district.

      These villages are further grouped in 10 community Dev. Blocks namely
    1. Achabal,
    2. Breng,
    3. Dachipora,
    4. D. H. Pora,
    5. Khoveripora,
    6. Kulgam,
    7. Qazigund,
    8. Quimoh,
    9. Shahabad,
    10. Shanges,
       Urban areas of the district consists of one T.A.C (Ananthnag) and 8 N.A.C's viz Achabal, Bijbehara, Doru-Verinag, Kokernag, Kulgam, Mattan, Pahalgam and Qazigund.

       The population of the district as per census of 1981 is 6.56 lacs. Person representing 11% of J&K state population. The projected population of the year 1991 has been estimated of the order of 8.26 lac souls.

      The district can boast of largest No. of health resorts in the State like Achabal, Ahrabal, Duksum, Guriwattan, Kokernag, Kungwattan, Pahalgam, Verinag, Wasaknag etc. these health restors attract a good number of Tourists Industry.

      The district is also famous for Amar Nath Cave situated at a distance of 48 kms. From Pahalgam which attracts thousands of pilgrims every year from all over the country.

      The district has good reputation of congenial climate, bubbling Springs, Streams, water falls, fragrant flowers, delicious fruits, fertile soil, pastures and other natural sceneries.

    RELIGIOUS AND HISTORICAL PLACES OF THE DISTRICT

    SHRINE OF AISHMUQAM:-
    Aishmuqam is well known in every part of Kashmir on account of the Historic Shrine of Shiekh Zain-ud-din (RA), who lived in 15th century A. D and was the one of the principal disciples of Shiekh Noor-ud-din (RA), the leading Reshi of Kashmir.

    TOMB OF BABA HYDER RESHI:-
    The tomb of Resho Molu who was born on 29th Rajab 909 Hajri (27-01-1540 A. D) in village Danter in Tehsil Ananthnag in the house of Shiekh Abdullah a black smith by profession.

    MASJID SYED SHAB:-
    The mosque of Syed Sahab has been constructed in the memory of one Hazrat Syed Mohammad Inayat-ullah Qadri Samnani.

    MASJID BABA DAWOOD KAHKI:-
    Masjid Khaki is one of the oldest mosque in the town and is situated in Reshi Bazar of Mohala Khaki Shaban in the town.

    AMARNATH JI:-
    The district is also famous for the Amarnath Ji cave situated 20 Km away for Shah Nag in Tehsil Pahalgam, which attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.

    MARTAND TAMPLE:-
    (Sun God Temple) Martand temple is impressive and grandest of all old monuments of Kashmir and is situated at a distance of 6 Kms from Ananthnag.

    NAGHBAL:-
    The entire complex near Shree Bagh is known popularly as Naghbal and is famous Hindu Religious center at Anan.

    KHERBAWANI ASTHAPAN (DERIBAL):-
    Deribal Temple is situated in Mohala Khaki Shaibaban and is just adjacent to mosque of Hazrat Dawood Khaki Ananthnag.
